HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT PILLOW

There is much to consider when buying a new pillow. Not only are there different heights and sizes, but there are different fills, fabrics and degrees of firmness.

PUT YOUR PILLOW TO THE TEST

Fold your pillow in half then release it. A ‘good pillow’ will release and bounce back into shape. If your pillow does not do this, then it’s time to replace your pillow.

WHICH PILLOW IS THE RIGHT ONE

Think about your sleeping style – do you sleep on your stomach, back or side? This will determine the height of the pillow that best suits you. Height is very important as this supports your head and neck while you sleep. To maintain your neck in a neutral position in alignment with your spine, side sleepers should choose a medium/high pillow, back sleepers a low/medium and tummy sleepers a low loft pillow.

IS YOUR PILLOW COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR MATTRESS?

The firmness of a mattress has much to do with pillow performance. If you sleep on a firm mattress your body will lie higher and not sink down, therefore your pillow will need more height or thickness. If you sleep on a soft mattress, you will sleep lower by sinking into the bed, requiring a pillow with less height. If your mattress is between firm and soft, a medium thickness pillow will suit you better.

CHOOSE A PILLOW THAT IS COMFORTABLE

Not only is height a consideration in choosing a pillow, comfort also plays a large part. If a pillow feels comfortable, you’re more likely to relax, get a good night’s sleep and feel well rested in the morning. Comfort is a personal choice.

WHAT’S YOUR SLEEP POSITION?

The most common sleep position is The Foetus. In a survey of 1,000 people, 41% of people found this most comfortable, followed by The Log (15%), The Yearner (13%), The Soldier (8%), The Freefaller (7%) and The Starfish (5%).

MEMORY FOAM

After its development by NASA for space craft safety and comfort, Memory Foam was adopted by the medical field for bed restricted patients as it was recognised to improve alignment and circulation in the body due to its unique moulding properties. This pressure relief technology enables Memory Foam pillows to mould to the head and neck giving support to the sleeper, promoting a better night’s sleep.

LATEX

Latex is a sustainable and renewable resource, harvested from rubber trees (hevea brasiliensis). The resin is whipped and then baked to form a long lasting, cushiony substance, which is moulded into a pin-core construction. Natural latex is inherently non-allergenic, anti-microbial, bacteria, moisture and dust mite resistant. It will stand the test of time.

DOWN & FEATHER

A totally natural product, down and feather is harvested commonly from duck and geese. The feathers are from the wings and back of the bird and add loft and weight to the pillow. Down is the soft, fluffy plumage from the chest area and is a natural insulator. Down and feather pillows are soft, cuddly, mouldable, lightweight and durable. The filling moulds to your head and neck, providing support and comfort. Luxuriously light and plush.

MICROFIBRE

Microfibre is a modern synthetic fabric. The ultra-thin fibres create pillows that are super soft, lightweight, long lasting and easy care. The filling is air blown into the pillow casing, promoting good loft and softness. Microfibre is designed to emulate the characteristics and feel of down but with the added benefit of easy maintenance. Pillows made from microfibre quickly regain their shape making them supportive and long wearing. Often preferred by allergy sufferers and children as they are dust mite resistant and machine washable.
