Everything you need to know about candles

One of our favourite pieces to bring an aura of warmth and ‘homeliness’ to a bedroom or living space is a great candle. Aside from smelling nice and looking beautiful, candles are thought to improve moods, enhance sleep and even aid memory function. From scents of lemon, right through to notes of oak – there are fragrances for every occasion and style of room. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite candles, alongside some interesting facts to get you started on your journey.

They have an interesting history.
Candles were thought to have originated in Ancient Egypt in 3000 BC and initially comprised of reeds dipped in animal fat, which were lit to provide a glow for pathways and rituals. Since then, candles have been used in cakes for celebration (thanks to Germany) and play a part in religious ceremonies too. They’re also used as home decorator items, setting a mood to promote health and wellbeing.

What scent and size should I choose?
A candle with a hint of lavender works well to invite people into the home as it promotes a sense of calm. This is perfect for your living room or bedroom. Slightly sweeter notes like caramel or vanilla are great for bathrooms, but you can also experiment with florals scents in here too. If you’re after something a little different, try this Bakery Binge candle from Glasshouse that smells like freshly-baked cookies.

Candles come in a full range of sizes – the larger the candle, the longer burn time it will have. We suggest using a larger (3 wick) candle for a living room if you are burning it every day, and a smaller candle for those once-a-week burns in the bathroom. We also love a neutral, fresh scent (Cucumber, Basil & Coriander) from Melbourne small business, Burnn Candles.

How do I get the most out of my candle?
The very first time you light a candle, you should let it burn for at least an hour or until it’s burnt all the way to the edges – the wax should melt the entire top layer. Also make sure you trim the wick to prevent uneven burning. We love this matte black candle set from Scarlet & Grace – pretty and functional.

What about ingredients?
Think of candles like air quality – you’re burning the scent into your home so always look for a candle that’s made with quality ingredients. Soy wax has tremendous burn quality and boasts home-friendly ingredients. Brands like Diptyque Paris and Ecoya are known for having some of the best soy candles.

Don’t forget, once you burn your candles, there are so many great ways to reuse your jar! Wash it out and plant succulents or try DIY-ing your own candle.
